A thriving private sector is essential to achieve economic growth and poverty reduction. Private enterprises not only contribute to the income of a country, but they also provide employment, which leads to better standards of living. Therefore, support for the private sector to increase its competitiveness at both national and international levels is an important step to achieve the goal of economic development in Yemen.
Despite the ongoing series of economic reforms, businessmen and businesswomen in Yemen still face a difficult political, legal and institutional environment for enterprises. Rules and regulations are still burdensome for enterprises and present obstacles for investments and economic activities. In addition, access to business-related services and financial services is often limited. Yet enterprises require both favorable framework conditions as well as satisfactory services to operate competitively.
PSDP was jointly set up by the Yemeni and the German government to improve the business environment in Yemen and facilitate access to business-oriented services. To this end, PSDP - which is implemented by the German Technical Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) - works in three interrelated areas: Business Enabling Environment, Business Development Services and Microfinance. Jointly with its Yemeni partner organizations, PSDP works on the identification of the deficits and on the formulation and realization of new and adapted strategies for private sector development in Yemen. |
